Acapulco Vacations to Fort San Diego
Acapulco vacations should always include a stop at El Fuerte de San Diego, or Fort San Diego. Acapulco was a very important region to the Spanish empire in the 17th century, so much so that it was even called “New Spain”. That’s because Acapulco was an integral part of the trade routes to the Philippines, which was also a Spanish colony at that time. To protect the city against pirate attacks, El Fuerte de San Diego was built in 1616. In 1776, a strong earthquake hit the city that caused damage to the fort’s original structure; the pentagon-shaped building with a moat that was constructed to replace it still exists on the site. Part of the fortress has been turned into a museum, the Museo Historico de Acapulco, where visitors learn about ancient relics such as porcelain vases, baskets, and ceramics. Beautiful kimonos, exquisitely embroidered silk tapestries, and ornamental shells and beads are also open for public viewing. A few doors down and also worth a visit is the Casa de Mascaras, a delightful museum of over 500 ceremonial masks.
